The U.S. Department of Justice has updated its policies for charging case under the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act, allowing legitimate white hacking. Urging prosecutors not to bring cases against legitimate cybersecurity researchers under main U.S. anti-hacking law, enacted in 1986.

The Supreme Court last year narrowed the laws scope, ruling that it didnt cover instances in which people use their authorized computer access for improper purposes. The 6-3 decision held that a Georgia police officer violated his departments policy—but didnt break the anti-hacking law—by running a license-plate check with a law-enforcement database in return for cash.
