The U.S government has joined a whistleblower suit and filed a complaint-in-intervention against the Georgia Institute of technology and Georgia Tech Research Corporation Alleging Cybersecurity Violations. For knowingly failing to meet cybersecurity requirements in connect with U.S DoD contracts.

There has been a focus by the DoJ on universities under the false claims act. With several U.S universities facing claims, including falsifying data on claims, improper charging and cybersecurity.

A case against Pen State was unsealed in 2023. In the case a whistleblower alleges the university submitted false certifications concerning NIST 800-171 compliance to the DoD.

In general one wonders how academic institutions and defense contractor fair under DFARS 252.204-7012 for the protection of CUI, as cases are unsealed and whistleblowers come forward to raise compliance concerns. There’s a cautionary tail for board of all covered entities, whistleblowers should not be ignored and concerns should be accounted for. As it could be a ‘nice little earner’.
