The UK government has woken up to the threat cyber attacks pose to UK businesses and the UK economy. Ministers and heads of UK security agencies have written to Chairs and CEOs of UK companies, emphasising the threat that cyber poses to UK industry, the role boards play in managing cyber risk, and the tools available to govern cybersecurity risk management.

The letter is an indication of the threat the UK faces from cyber attacks, and it has to be applauded as a first step in the communication of cybersecurity by the UK government to industry. One hopes UK industry is receptive to the message, as it faces the significant challenge of adopting cybersecurity governance and risk management.

The UK neither has the resources, skills, nor experienced cyber professionals to enable the UK industry to manage cyber. The success of the adoption of Cyber Essentials is an indication of the appetite of UK industry in managing cybersecurity. One hopes the government takes a bold step in line with its allies when it releases its Cyber Security and Resilience Bill before the end of the year.

One cannot forget that the US and EU already regulate cybersecurity compliance, including CNI providers, global defence contractors, and Financial Institutions.
