The University of California San Francisco pays a $1.1Mn ransomware demand following an infection in June. Whilst the University stated that there was no major impact, it goes some way to identify the impact of ransomware and data theft to the academic community and the loss of valuable IP.

It is probably fair to say that once a compromise has been identified and a ransomware demand made, any data would have already gone. This attack follows the recent trend of the targeting of medical facilities and the on-going challenges of COVID 19.
