The US federal government and the DoD have been moving ahead, at pace, making changes to improve supply chain security. Be that through the article 889 of the National Defense Authorization Act or the more recent release of the DoDs interim final ruling to formalise the oversight and assurance of NIST SP 800 – 171 and CMMC requirements.

DoD Contractors and subcontractors should pay close attention to these changes. There is a concerted effort to protect US Intellectual Property (IP) and secure its supply chain, in the case of the DoD since 2017. Cyber assessment will be required for contract awards and going forward the results will be used to make risk based decisions. It is important that companies evaluate their compliance to NIST SP 800 – 171, remediate gaps and plan for a future where supply chain security is very high up on the DoDs and Federal agenda.

For governments, the direction of travel is being set for supply chain security in the US. The development and reciprocity of cyber security standards should be a conversation on the table. Least of all as its just good cyber security practice.
