There are alot of questions about CMMC and cyber. The questions and answers raised at this weeks Senate Cyber-subcommittee do not do the subject justice. Cyber is an immensely complex risk to manage, one where there are no 100% guarantees, but one where inaction creates significantly more problems and costs than action. It is a journey and one which most organisations have yet to start, least of all Federal Government.

The answers is ‘we don’t know if implementation of CMMC would have prevented Solarwinds’ as much as we don’t know if giving every citizen in the world a COVID vaccine is going to stop the spread of the virus. It takes just one mutation to change its DNA to make it a different strain. But what it does do is given every citizen a fair chance of protection and sets the bar for the protection of society as a whole.

If all companies applied CMMC like standards then it would set the bar, the high watermark for hackers to achieve. It would protect more of our products and services than we do today. It would set the cultural baseline for society as we would all understand that we need to protect our digital identities, our corporate IP and data. It would provide the public and private sector with a common cyber language and paradigm to view security.
