There will come a time when AI will be used to manage cyber security. It will be able to remove much of the labour intensive and complex oversight, the intricate assessment of threats and manage impacts.

The challenge we face in security is complexity. Complexity of interactions within security domains and the. complexity of interactions between domains. Added to which we have organisational complexity and with all automation systems the complexity of people. In my view for true success you have to automate the management and oversight of large parts of security frameworks like NIST or ISO 27001. Which parts is open for debate.

But let’s not forget AI and automation are successfully used in many areas, for example genome sequencing and genetics. But a bit like automating open heart surgery, we’re not quite there yet.
