This article demonstrates why CMMC compliance is a problem for the International DIB. It’s a simple problem that relates to National Security.

Starting in November 2026, the DoW will formally introduce requirements for covered defence contractors to provide a certificate of CMMC compliance from CMMC level 2. Without which they will not be able to tender for a DoW contract (we already see the DoW requiring confirmation of CMMC self-assessment to access tender documentation), or be awarded DoW contracts. As covered, defence companies will be required to undergo and pass an independent assessment of CMMC compliance. This assessment can only be carried out by a CMMC Certified Assessor (CCA) who works for a C3PAO.

Here’s the problem: CCAs will be required to be Security Cleared by the National Security Authority before they can conduct work on behalf of a defence contractor. Upskilling UK nationals to do CMMC-related work will be important, given the global shortage of assessors, as it is highly likely that National assessors will be required to be security cleared.
