This has to be the largest recorded, most expensive and egregious data breach in UK history. That resulted in putting the lives of Afghans, who sort refuge in the UK following the Afghan war, at risk. A list of 100,000 Afghans that helped the British during the Afghan war was lost/ stolen.
‘Gifting the vengeful Taliban a ‘kill list’ and putting around 100,000 people at ‘risk of death’
The result lead to the clandestine relocation of Afghans to the UK without the knowledge of UK taxpayers and MPs. To make matters worst Afghans that were rescued are suing the UK government for leaking the data in the first instance, at an estimated costs of £1billion to UK tax payers, on top of the ‘upto’ £6 billion is cost to manage the relocation.
The defense Secretary, Mr Healey : ‘I’m announcing to the House a change in Government policy. I’m closing this resettlement route, I’m disclosing the data loss, and I’m confirming that the court order was lifted at 12 noon today. So what happens to those that have not been relocated?
One wonders if the loss of the data has turned into the UKs largest financial loss due to a data breach? It certainly turned in to a ‘life and death’ situation for Afghan nationals and a £7 billion costs to the British Tax payer to do the right thing.
