This is a major data breach and lapse in security for the UK and Northern Ireland, as the Police Service of Northern mistakenly reveals the details of 10,000 staff. In a breach that NI’s Police Federation said could cause incalculable damage.
Assistant Chief Constable Chris Todd said the error was unacceptable.
He added: We operate in an environment, at the moment, where there is a severe threat to our colleagues from Northern Ireland-related terrorism and this is the last thing that anybody in the organisation wants to be hearing this evening.
With Northern Ireland police being targets for terrorist, it is simply a disaster that this data has been released. One cannot understand how a human error could lead to this information being published. How does any single source have the ability to release this type of data, what checks and balances are in place to allow someone access to the HR records, without authorization from at least one other source.
