To be clear upfront, I’m not writing this about any specific Nation state. But to reflect on a simple case of IOT devices and the data that is collected, how it is collected and is it worth it for a coffee machine, just yet. Its also a light end of week read to have with your coffee……………….just make sure its not plugged into your network.

The report by Christopher Balding and Joe Wu is thought provoking on IOT devices and highlights the issues with IOT devices and data collection, that has gone unmanaged. Our ability to manage and control the data they collect and where that data is sent. Data that if stolen is aggregated by threat actors to build comprehensive data sets about individuals and used through a kill chain as Open Source Threat Intelligence. Another interesting observation is if data can get out threat actors can get back in, the Target hack of 2013 is a notable example.
I’d switch to tea, but I don’t like tea.
