Call us now:
To take a euphemism ‘the sleeping tiger is waking and starting to stretch’. The past month has seen stories of China acquiring companies to secure Federal contracts, strip IP and move it back to China. (https://lnkd.in/eXtq4bnb)
Nations states have been steeling IP for years, some of it the most sensitive defence data. The GAO has been reporting for years that the DoD has problems managing CUI across the DIB. The recent Twitter Senate Judiciary Hearing confirmed that Twitter placed ‘state actors’ in roles, a company that allegedly allowed engineers privilege access to the most sensitive production data. Yet we wonder why countries keep pace with weapon system design, medical advances or state craft.
Are we slowly waking to the fact that data is our most important asset and it is not secure. Recent communications of cloud security are testament to the fact that we do not know where our data goes, and nor do the cloud providers, or worst we do not have the controls in place to prevent it being located off shore. (https://lnkd.in/e7_y769b).
We must not forget that some nations play a ‘long game’ measured in decades, not short term measured in several years. We should consider the experience of those that make cybersecurity decisions at the highest levels in the public and private sector. As the recent Uber CSO case identified and further cases will attest, or those that are responsible for securing defence supply chains. As regulators are waking to the fact that market forces do not work and no amount of documented standards have delivered cybersecurity.
There needs to be a radical change in our cybersecurity posture, we need to focus on delivery. As posted several times this video re-affirms the challenges we face. (https://lnkd.in/eVbz9Sun). Cyber has to go ‘left of bang’ and requires compliance attestation.
A final thought. You need no professional qualifications or meet any professional standards to lead and manage cybersecurity. As required by lawyers, accountants, engineers, doctors, vets and pharmacists to practice.
