US automakers have upended the software development lifecycle, following a rule issued by the Us Department Of Commerce Bureau of Industry. Banning code written in China or by Chinese-owned firms from Vehicles that connect to the cloud on the grounds of security.

The regulation has required US automakers to dig deep into their code and follow the software supply chains and trace the source of code through suppliers. The regulation has forced a restructure of automakers, suppliers, and the supply chain, as parts of the digital auto market were dominated by Chinese suppliers. With suppliers relocating development teams, selling off operations tied to Western customers, or relocating operations to the US.

The process has highlighted the challenges of globalisation and security, as the dependency on rare earth minerals, global supply chains, and access to proprietary code all become kinetic and logical security concerns.
