Versa Director is a SD WAN network configuration platform used to centrally configure, manage and monitor network devices manage, traffic routing, security policies and other aspects of a SD-WAN environment. It is a tool used ISPs, telecoms providers, MSPs and SMEs globally.

If correct, it appears that Versa director has been targeted by Nation State threat actors targeting ISPs.

Geopolitical tensions have recently pointed towards China focusing on disrupting national and international CNI infrastructure, in the event of a conflict between China and US.

Krebs on security reported
“Volt Typhoon’s choice of targets and pattern of behavior is not consistent with traditional cyber espionage or intelligence gathering operations, and the U.S. authoring agencies assess with high confidence that Volt Typhoon actors are pre-positioning themselves on IT networks to enable lateral movement to OT assets to disrupt functions,” CISA, the FBI and NSA have repeatedly warned.
