We’re still some way off getting cyber (security) leaders at the board table. Security spend is rising, yet CISOs aren’t getting their feet under the board table. They are still not peers of CIO. In my view there’s something which does not feel right with this. CIOs are taking on the role, which can be a conflict of interest.
Cyber is the biggest non-financial risk enterprise wide risk, a balance sheet risk most companies will face and the CISO is one of the most important roles at securing the balance sheet. They are the most qualified at managing cyber risk.
The role of the CISO needs to be one of engaging with the CEO and Chairman to ensure shareholder value is secured; the balance sheet is protected and given the direction of regulatory travel, keeping the board out of court.
This can however put CISOs at odds with other board members, its an enterprise wide risk after all. As is often the case with all oversight and risk management roles. It identifies weakness and vulnerabilities at all levels, to be fixed, to secure the company.
