Where do you start with this? There were many organisations and people defrauded by these teams and in some alleged cases of financial institutions losing £14Mn and a premier football team losing a combined £124Mn through BEC and VEC schemes. Likely to be in addition to the smaller companies and individuals impacted.

I was worried about the global issues we face in cyber with geopolitical tensions rising between the US and China, or Iran and Israel. But the BEC/ VEC scheme used was very profitable. It does ask some very serious questions. How were the group able to buy so much, without being KYC checked? I can’t buy a Ford Fiesta without being asked to provide a significant amount of information and a background check, let alone luxury cars and property. It also goes some way to support the view that we’re still not getting the message home, that personal private data has value to someone and we haven’t got the controls regime sorted when it comes to payments.

The final reflection for me is the number of social media followers they had. What perception will their followers have and how do you address that?
