Whilst cybersecurity risk is front and center following the Crowdstrike incident. The enclosed report by the U S GAO makes for an interesting read.

The GAO is the U.S governments auditor. In its view the U.S coastguard had a way to go to Secure the Marine Transportation System against cyberattack. With 2 out of 4 recommendation remaining unresolved.

The coast guard is not adequately staffed to manage cybersecurity and its scope of operation is not broad enough to effectively manage cybersecurity. The Coast Guard does not have the authority or training to enforce private industry compliance with standard cybersecurity practices.

Private industry is struggling to work with the coast guard due to it’s lack of expertise.

The U.S coast guard overseas maritime security. Cybersecurity is critical to the security of the U.S water transportation sysyem upon which the U.S relies for a significant amount of its international trade and domestic production.
