You either love the World Economic Forum (WEF) or hate them. They write allot and facilitate conversations, but don’t necessarily change the needle on the dial.

Saying that this is a paper worth reading given the inflating and deflating bubble, that is called AI. Least of all given the conversations about adoption, usage and recent murmurings coming from the insurance industry about underwriting AI related risk by insurers. AKA they won’t, driving a conversation about how organisations demonstrate governance, oversight and assurance of AI (page 16)

Yes, the paper recommends that AI Governance is built into organisations, before its scaled. That is a resounding sensible requirement for many reasons.
1. AI relies on the management and governance of several key risks, namely data, cloud and cyber. If you can’t manage or demonstrate governance of these you won’t demonstrate governance of AI.
2. Governance over AI requires a clear path from design, through adoption at scale and ongoing management.
3. Failure to Govern AI will result in rather nasty outcomes. One is organisations may not be insured, board failure to meet fiduciary responsibilities, failure to comply with regulations. The EU AI Act requires organisations demonstrate AI risk management.
4. Finally, AI is dependent on data, cloud and cyber risk. Ai risk can’t be managed in insolation, and we know how well boards manage data, cloud and cyber risk.

Governance is a great word, but who really knows how to implement governance of AI, and who will test it?

One suspects it will take the failure of AI before listen to the risks and risk management.
