A case to watch closely. PAX a top 3 global leader in payment card terminals is under investigation by US and UK security services. Following concerns raised by a payment provider that packets of data being sent from the terminal could not be accounted for. Leading to the replacement of PAX payment terminal with terminal from other vendors.

The FBI and DHS carried out court-authorised searches of PAX facilities in the US as part of the investigation. With PAX Global technology shares dropping 43% in Hong King. If proven to be correct an PAX terminals are sending unsolicited packets of information outside of the approved payments infrastructure this raises many questions about the security of card payments and the use of card payment information by an unauthorised 3rd party.

It also begs the question of the security of our supply chains and the collection and use of information by organisations. As was seen by the recent SolarWinds and Kaseya hacks where source code was modified to enable hackers access to critical infrastructure.
