A configuration issue that had gone un-noticed for 10 years raises concerns of automotive data security. While there is no indication that data associated with vehicles could be affected, there’s no indication that it could not.
Toyota has faced a number of data breaches over the past few years and one hopes that it has got to grips with its cybersecurity, but demonstrations such as this leave one feeling that it has not. A 10 year security configuration problem should have been picked up through the remedial actions from previous data breaches.
Incidents such as these raise questions over cloud security, connected vehicle security, car insurance and credit risk.
