A good read if you are in the Defence Industry Base (DIB). This month the US GAO issued a report to congress on weapon systems cybersecurity. Specifically assessing the ability of the DoD to include cyber security requirements into the product procurement process.

In general highlights why some US DoD weapon system faced challenges when it comes to cyber security. The procurement process is not adequately addressing the cyber security requirements for modern complex weapon systems.

Simply put, the DoD needs to be more specific about the cyber security it wants in its new weapon systems and include guidance to its procurement teams through the product development life cycle.

‘If you don’t ask for it, you don’t get it’

If appropriate cyber controls are not making their way into defence systems and the 2020 Interim Final Ruling for DFARS and CMMC has been put in place to secure DoD IP. Does the DIB need to take a look at cyber security posture and how to protect the full product life cycle management process, from drawing board to removal from service and destruction?
