A great article on the challenges with managing the big four consultancys. A shake up maybe needed, regulation is most certainly required and forced separation and chinese walls will continue. But the fact remains no one ever got sacked for employing the big four.
A bit like a half filled balloon you can squeeze it in the middle, and it will simply find its own way. As any attempt to changing the big accounting firms will demonstrate, they are to ingrained into public life and we need more auditors, not less. As the PCAOB continues to dig deep into them, one suspects that until the big four feel regulatory oversight, the game will be the same, just different pieces in different locations.
