Certification does not a cyber professional make. Nor are they a bad thing, especially given the challenges we face with managing cyber risk. But we have to recognise the gaps between certifications and the experience and skills need to comply with regulation.

You would not let a lawyer. accountant or engineer practice without both qualifications and experience. Why would you do the same for cyber?

Unfortunately this does to address the significant shortfall in cyber resources industry faces today.

Cyber governance, strategy and risk management require experienced and qualified resources. Especially if cyber becomes regulated and boards need to attest cybersecurity risk management. As the CSO from Uber found out.
