A interesting article that starts to paint the picture of cybersecurity, not so much for the UK but for every nation state. The article makes a fair judgement on the setting up of UK Governments cybersecurity under GCHQ and NCSC.

For me the challenge is not one of the privatisation of cybersecurity, it one of allowing market forces to manage the development of cybersecurity. This happened for many good reasons, but our reliance on cyberspace and social media has caught Governments by surprise. Governments that rightly didn’t want to get involved in preventing freedom of speech and regulating the internet.

The cyber market has also flourished, as a colleague recently said. ‘Cybersecurity is a sellers market and companies don’t know what they want and they will buy what they need to buy’

Cyber is a Geopolitical weapon, recognised by NATO as a domain of operation. It’s also a profitable criminal activity, as the recent BBC article on REvil and the lifestyle of the hackers and their ability to continue to operate in Russia demonstrates. But the US more than any other country has realised cyber is a National Security issue and market forces themselves do not work to manage cyber security. US IP has been compromised for several years by other nation states and their proxy’s that have profited from US R&D, using Cyber as a tool for National and Corporate IP theft, the disruption of CNI and public and private sectors.

Congress is pushing more cyber regulation in 2021 than it has in the past 20 years. The ‘regulatory ‘stick’ appears to be driving US ‘defensive’ cyber strategy and it won’t be long before its impact is felt outside the country. Meeting US cybersecurity standards will be required to do business with Federal Government if Chris Inglis the new US National Cyber Director gets his way.
