A very interesting read as US banks report more than $1 billion in potential ransomware payments in 2021. With Russian attack vectors being the top 5 tools accounting for the most payments. It goes partway to explain why the U.S government is hosting a ransomware summit with partner nations and tech providers.

The data show that “ransomware — including attacks perpetrated by Russian-linked actors — remain a serious threat to our national and economic security,” FinCEN Acting Director Himamauli Das said in a statement.

Under DoT OFAC rules ransomware rules payments should be closely scrutinized. The DoT updated its advisory on ransomware payments in September 2021 and reviewed review its Cyber-Related Sanctions Regulations in 2022.
