Thanks for posting Gerry Kennedy. The NSA has a significant cyber capability, and a demonstrated ability to ‘look inside’ platforms. But this only goes so far. Cyber has to be a defensive capability driven by industry going forward. Offensive cyber is a government capability and one that has now reached a climax, with many nation states having a capability to successfully launch cyber attacks against other states. But the impact of those ‘offensive attacks’ is invariably going to be on the private sector.
Here lies the obvious problem. The private sector is driven by profit and cyber defenses cost. Those that do well a cyber such as Financial Services firms attest to the fact that cyber is driven by the regulatory challenges of the Basel accords, regulatory oversight and fines, and the threat of losing a banking licence.
Yes cyber has to undoubtedly move ‘left of bang’, creating a defensive capability. But there needs to be a strategy and funding from governments? How long do you think it takes to create defensive cyber and how are governments going to address ransomware attacks if organisations have no defensive strategy. Cyber insurance?
