China stole vast amounts of UK state secrets in a hack back in 2020. While there is concern about the UK policy towards China after the abandonment of a Chinese spying case. What about the cybersecurity of the UK and the ability of the UK to secure critical information nationally? While the hack was in 2020, more recent hacks demonstrate the lack of a coherent cyber policy and cybersecurity in the UK.

“Material from intelligence services. Material from the National Security Secretariat in the Cabinet Office. Things the government has to keep secret. If they’re not secret, then there are very, very serious implications for it.”

While the UK government deals with the political fallout of a legal case related to Chinese spying, one can consider the approach of our allies to national security and economic security as it relates to cybersecurity.

Recent months have seen more public activity related to cybersecurity in the UK than at any time in the past 5 years. For many years, the UK seemed like a cybersecurity island, with few reported hacks or issues.

One wonders how the UK is going to respond to the cybersecurity threat it faces. Maybe take a leaf out of our allies’ book? A lack of cybersecurity is translating into a lack of trust and confidence in information sharing. As the UK defence industry is finding out, under CMMC.
