UK industry must be prepared to deal with cyberattacks, which continue to grow in both frequency and impact. The effect on the UK economy, coupled with the increasing urgency the government places on cybersecurity, highlights the seriousness of the issue.

The challenge, however, is that 99% of UK businesses are SMEs. Most lack the knowledge, skills, resources, and funding to effectively manage cybersecurity risks or respond to attacks. Government data shows that many still overlook even the most basic cybersecurity measures.

While keeping physical records of how to respond to a cyber incident can be helpful, the reality is that today’s organisations are deeply digital. It is one thing to have a plan for how to operate during IT disruptions, but another to run a business when IT underpins nearly everything—product design, manufacturing, sales, logistics, and customer service. Operating without IT in a digital-first world is an entirely different challenge.

Carrying out a Business Impact Assessment (BIA) can help boards understand which processes would remain functional during a cyberattack and which would fail. Yet, it raises concerns about the state of our cybersecurity readiness and questions what we have been doing for the past 10 years as a country, when a response is to retreat to pen and paper.
