It’s time to get a grip. All the Marks and Spencer cyber attack tells us is that Boards of covered companies are ill prepared for cyber attacks. Cyber is not new and it’s unlikely to lead to retail armageddon or rush humanity to its exit, any time soon.

The problem with the M&S, CooP and Harrolds attacks, is they distort our perception of cybersecurity and cyber risk management. There are many retailers that are working perfectly fine, my local Aldi and Lidl seem to have full shelves and I can still by my underwear from Amazon.

Whilst we run around worried about buying our croissants, we must not forget there are bigger cyber issues at hand. Cyber is a threat to national security and what we need to do next is ‘get a grip’ of cybersecurity and cyber risk management, both at a government and board level. Start with accountability and responsibility for its management.
