Nation-state threat actors are targeting the UK.

Nation-state threat actors are targeting the UK. They have no doubt been targeting the UK as long as they have been targeting every other Western Nation. The UK government is now ramping up its agenda on cybersecurity, asking UK industry and boards to stand up and be counted.

Brian D. McCarthy, while it is positive that the UK government has responded to the threat, has the UK missed the boat? Are we now trailing behind other nation-states that recognised the threat several years ago and took action to drive cyber into boardrooms?

There is little doubt that the UK is facing an unprecedented threat from nations such as China, Russia, Iran, and North Korea. But it feels like the UK reaction is one driven by the need to address the threat that’s blown up in our face, rather than a proactive action to enforce cybersecurity as a threat we should have recognised 5 years ago and have sat on our hands. (If we haven’t sat on our hands, then what have we done)

Nation-state attempts to damage UK infrastructure seem to be a daily occurrence.

Declaring a new era, the MI5 boss warned of fast-rising state threats coupled with a near record number of terrorism investigations. He said this was forcing the biggest shift in MI5’s mission since the 11 September 2001 terrorist attacks on the United States.

One suspects we need more than pen and paper………
