Call us now:
@Thaddeus Dziekanowski and Brian D. McCarthy, I try and stay away from predictions for another year in cyber. As is invariably what has been said in the past has come to fruition. But I thought that I’d push out a couple of links that set forth what 2026 looks like for cybersecurity.
1. National, Economic, and Corporate security – Governments have started to realise that cybersecurity is national security and economic security. Cyber warfare has always been there, but the attacks have invariably been low-key. But 2024 and 2025 have seen cyber attacks take a turn, and 2026 will be no different. Our lack of cybersecurity risk management and leadership, coupled with AI and a proficient and growing threat, will see attacks in 2026 take a turn towards a risk to human life.

2. Risk Transfer – Cyber insurance will keep focusing on major incidents (“Right of Bangâ€) but will struggle because cyber threats are growing faster than the ability of governments and businesses to manage them. This has already led to serious events, such as the JLR hack, which affected UK GDP and economic security. While cyber insurance is an important tool for transferring risk, it will continue to face challenges unless the industry shifts its focus toward preventing attacks, not just responding to them, and does so across both the public and private sectors. Encouragingly, prediction 3 may offer a path forward.

3. The Growing Pains of Cyber Regulation – Like it or not, cyber regulation is now the main tool governments have to manage cybersecurity and protect national and economic security. New rules, such as NIS2 in the EUÂ and CMMC in the US, are introducing real penalties for non-compliance, including personal and corporate fines, as seen recently in the Portuguese transposition of NIS2. Regulation will drive real change once enforcement becomes consistent, but only if governments, insurers, and public and private sector boards take compliance seriously. True real-time cyber risk management remains out of reach for now.
