Here lies a problem for UK industry as demonstrated by the 2025 hack on Jaguar Land Rover. All roads lead to cybersecurity for the UK defence. It’s an issue the United States Department of War recognised 10 years ago and struggled to address. The DoW now requires cybersecurity regulatory compliance for the award of new contracts, which include contracts across the logistics and supply chain.
Wars are not fought with Tanks and Jets alone; they are fought in the factories, shipyards, logistics depots, on roads, and on the high street. It’s far easier to target single points of failure using cyberattacks than to waste valuable time and effort on expensive military hardware.
The statement made by ‘Q’ to James Bond in Skyfall, Â I’ll hazard I can do more damage on my laptop sitting in my pajamas before my first cup of Earl Grey than you can do in a year in the field.
Yes, now and then, a trigger needs to be pulled. But you can do more damage targeting a logistics hub or critical manufacturer than a regiment of tanks can do. A regiment that can be stopped in its tracks without spare parts or fuel, food, or a £500 drone.
Cybersecurity is national security.
