The enclosed statement by the Chair of the SEC Gary Gensler is a very significant for cybersecurity. Announcing a proposal by the SEC for cybersecurity reforms aimed at the Investment management industry. The 243 page document sets out requirements for cybersecurity management, oversight and assurance for covered Investment‚ Adviser, Registered Investment Companies and Business Development Companies that advise and manage over $14trillion is assets.

This announcement and proposal make it clear that the SEC takes cybersecurity seriously and its intentions to oversight and assure cybersecurity of the investment management industry. I suspect that this is the start of a broader range of cybersecurity and risk management regulations, that will affect regulated financial markets to be published by the SEC over the coming weeks or months.

For those wondering about cyber incident reporting, that has been addressed. The document is to follow.
