The number of workers affected by the JLR cyber attack is in the region of 200,000 people. Current estimates are that the attack is costing the company £50 million a week, with no clear end date in sight.
The UK government is between a rock and a hard place. JLR is owned by Tata Motors, who have a significant balance sheet and, in principle, should fund the cost of the cyber attack itself. But should Tata fund other private sector organisations, as the attack and its effect on supply chains is an outcome of the relationship between Tata and the suppliers?
On the other side of the coin, the effect of the cyber attack on UK workers and UK industry appears profound. Without the industry that JLR supports, the UK loses engineering jobs that the UK desperately needs. But should the UK taxpayer foot the bill?
It’s a difficult situation. A Situation triggered by a cyber attack.
