The Prime Ministers of Australian and New Zealand Governments have confirmed that a cyber attack on either country could trigger article 4 of the ANZUS treaty.

“We reaffirmed that international law applies in cyber space and that a cyber attack on either country could, depending on its nature, constitute an attack under article four of the treaty.”

Recognizing cyber as a domain of operation and international law applies in cyber space is a big step. As is reaffirming that a cyber attack on either nation could constitute and attack under article 4 of the ANZUS treaty. Coming at a time of heightened global tensions, and the rise in the use of cyber as a nation state weapon.
