Call us now:
The problem we face is that no one has an answer to the cyber problem, and it affects everyone. Industry has no answers, and market forces and the cyber industrial complex are not addressing the problem. The perfect cyber storm is upon us, with no cyber skills, no money, facing an asymmetric risk, hacks that take minutes when managing cyber risk takes months, and hacks run by school kids. Cyber solutions are not working.
The cost of cybercrime is immeasurable. Attacks such as JLR, UnitedHealth Group, MGM Resorts International, Marks and Spencer, and CDK Global in the past year have demonstrated the significant impact of hackers on international business. Demonstrating companies were unable to prevent cyber attacks, and once started, were unable to manage the fallout of the hacks across their supply chains and society.
Cyber risk can only be managed by governments, industry, and society taking responsibility for security. The first step has to come from the government, as demonstrated by EU, US, and APAC regulators. But as demonstrated by the response to the JLR, M&S, and UnitedHealthcare hacks, governments are like rabbits in headlights.
The money spent, rhetoric, and posturing by the cyber industrial complex and many governments have acknowledged statements made by people like Chris Inglis, that cyber is a whole-of-society problem. But what’s the solution? Maybe EU, US, and APAC regulators have got it right. Make public and private sector boards accountable and responsible for managing cyber risk.
The next hack is just around the corner. One waits to see who it’s going to be; the hackers have the Voodoo doll out, and the pins are being inserted as we speak.
