The UK Government has penned a letter to UK companies warning them of the significantly increased danger that AI now poses to their cybersecurity, a model such as Anthropics Mythos model has demonstrated.
In what could be a demonstration of either the lack of knowledge about AI and cybersecurity, or the lack of knowledge among those communicating the issue to industry. We have heard a lot about AI being able to identify software vulnerabilities, but hear far less about the work that has been carried out by the UK AISI, which is significantly more concerning as it relates to the testing of Mythos.

The AISI demonstrated that in tests, Mythos was able to automate at least 22 or 32 seps of its cyber Kill Chain, start to finish, in 3 out of its 10 attempts. We should be more worried about this than the ability to identify software vulnerabilities. WHY? Simply put, the cyber horse has already left the stable, the genie is out of the bottle, and the AISI stats will only become more of an issue as the kill chain gap closes and AI becomes more repeatable and quicker at cyber attacks.
Like many nations, the UK has no defensive cyber strategy, nor does most of its industry, and when faced with AI threats such as Mythos, one is not sure what many companies are able to do to defend themselves. Least of all if it is used by Nation State threat actors.
We continue to push cyber essentials, which is the right and unfortunately the only thing to do. But industry is being met with a bulldozer, and is defending itself with a shovel. We know what happened with JLR and its effect on UK GDP, we know the effect of cyberattacks on the UnitedHealth Group, and the effects that are still being felt in the NHS following the Synnovis.
Maybe asking nicely just doesn’t work. Maybe time is not on our side anymore as AI has just taken it off us.
