The volume of cyber incidents faced by T-Mobile is not insignificant and belays the complexity of the problem they face. Writing a report recently on U.S and EU Cyber regulations I was struck by the depth and breadth of oversight, assurance and reporting regulators require and the number of industry sectors affected.
One wonders if attacks such as those at T-Mobile will focus U.S and EU regulators to conduct a more in depth evaluation of the organisations cybersecurity. The FTC has increased its veracity of oversight of cybersecurity, the SEC is moving in the same direction and EU cyber regulations were effective this week. T-Mobile falls under EU NIS 2, with an effective date of the 17th January 2023 and 21 months for member states to the enshrine the regulation into local laws.
To quote a colleague Bob Dix. The football pitch has been drawn and the rules of the games are being written. I would add that it won’t be long before the games starts and the regulators will begin 5 – 0 up. Precedence has already been set.
The Augusta Group wrote the rules, frameworks and solutions to implement organizational cybersecurity risk management, when the regulatory train left the station.
