There’s allot of talk this year about the threat posed by nation states using cyber as a tool for digital disruption and information gathering. The U.S Director of National Intelligence Avril Haines recently presented to Congress, raising concerns over the long game being played by China and pre-positioned cyber capabilities to damage CNI.
It should be of no surprise therefore that Nation State threat actors are focused on shipping. With over 80% of the worlds trade travelling by sea, why wouldn’t a nation state threat actor want to take a peak inside the operations companies in the maritime industry?
Nation states are moving on from IP theft, focusing in on the use of cyber as a tool to destabilize nations and effect national security. China has “moved on†from intellectual property theft, Natalie Pittore of the National Security Agency said at a conference panel discussion. “It’s increasingly what appears to be a pre-positioning (inside infrastructure) to have an effect,†said Pittore, the NSA’s cybersecurity liaison to the U.K.
One only has one question, what has to be done to counter the threat?
