This Gartner report paints a difficult and realistic picture for boards about cybersecurity resourcing. Cybersecurity is a difficult and thankless task and the role of the CISO can be difficult. Fighting a battle that you have no idea if you are winning or you are going to win. A battle that U.S, EU and Australian cyber regulation is transferring ‘Left of Bang’, sticking it on the balance sheet and making it a board risk to manage. As board members will be regulated, in some cases personally, for cybersecurity risk management, cyber will be an important risk to manage.

Cyber regulation creates a double edged sword for both CISOs and boards. They are reliant on each other to demonstrate an adequate level of cybersecurity risk management and recent U.S court cases, including the UBER CSO, Drizly and False Claims Act cases, have demonstrated the legal impact of cybersecurity risk management. That can only be expected to increase as regulatory compliance get regulatory oversight.

My prediction is that this is going to get harder before it gets better. Board do not want to lose their cyber expertise, it is a very difficult and expensive resource to source. No CISO no cybersecurity, no cybersecurity, no regulatory compliance.
