What does the Facebook outage teach us about our dependence on social media and platforms? Whilst the issue has been described as a network configuration problem, the impact has been felt by more than just Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp users. As a society we are dependent on digital products and services and their infrastructure and for Facebook the issue is reported to have cost the company $60Million in lost revenue.

The outage raises bigger questions and not just for Facebook. Should a BGP configuration issue be allowed to cause such a significant failure of a platform. BGP configuration is critical for internet operations, in this case it appears that Facebook was simply lost off the internet for external users. A consequence of the routing issue also included staff being locked out of buildings, and Facebook services which required access to Facebooks infrastructure for authentication unable to operate.

Another knock-on affect was the increased latency from the additional DNS traffic caused as apps continue to try and resolve the reported DNS error. This pushed up the traffic on DNS resolvers by a reported 30 times, creating potential latency and timeout issues for other providers. With Facebook down, other social media services saw increased queries from people trying to find out what was going on.

What this demonstrates is that the internet is a complex technically and our dependency upon it is as a society is also complex. But the interrelationships between both when platforms as big as Facebook and infrastructure fall-over are difficult to predict.
