When you burry your head in the sand there’s one thing that hackers will take great delight in exposing and its not how much money you can afford to pay. If hackers can encrypt your data, they can do so much more.

One is not convinced that using the cyber attack against the British Library is a good one, when describing the approach to managing cyber attacks and ransomware payments. It maybe true that there is no money in hacking the British State, they really don’t have any money, as the financial crisis demonstrates.

But the motivation behind hackers is not just financial as cyber is used as a weapon, to affect national security. One may not care that one cannot get a book out of the national Library, but one does care if the water don’t come out the taps or that payroll services work, or council services function (lets hope the hack on Leicester Council doesn’t effect its solvency (https://lnkd.in/d8tXqWrh) Good hackers make lots of money, nation state hackers focus on more than money, they focus on IP theft and disruption, as the hack on United Health demonstrated. It doesn’t take either to do damage to CNI ($Lapsus).

While the recent report on UK cybersecurity makes clear,

‘the government was accused of an “ostrich strategy” in response to the ransomware threat, after it responded to the Joint Committee on the National Security Strategy’s year-long inquiry into ransomware by insisting “all is well”, Margaret Beckett, the committee’s chair, said.
