Worth a read. The Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government (MHCLG) for England has interviewed 163 councils in England about ransomware. The results of which raises concerns about the maturity of cyber risk knowledge.

The report made 3 observations
1. Secure by design – Vulnerability to cyber attacks would be reduced if products and service were designed with security in mind.
2. Standards, expectations and goals – Cyber security risk would decrease at local authorities if councils subscribed to clear standards, expectations and goals.
3. Behaviours – Cyber security risk would be reduced if behaviours, ownership and responsibility for cyber health at local authorities were improved.

With the number of attacks on US municipalities in 2018 and 2019 proven to have caused significant damage to local services and the recent attack on Redcarr and Cleveland suspending upto 90% of the councils services. Cyber risk is an issue and the current economic climate is going to make it even harder for local authorities to secure public services.

CMMC is a model being adopted by the US DoD to address cyber risk across its supply chain. The UK needs to adopt a similar model and standard. Reach out if you want to discuss CMMC.
