Call us now:
Is it going to get a whole lot colder, a ‘cyber winter’ is on its way.
We can go way back to Stuxnet, the attack launched on Iran in 2010 to disrupt their Uranium enrichment programme. One of the first reported hacks which crossed the logical physical divide. Hacking industrial control systems (OT), to create a physical response, namely breaking the centrifuges. You may say that the Iranians learnt from this and given their cyber capabilities, hacking OT is an evolution in their response. With the potential to be both economically damaging and lethal.
The recent unconfirmed Iranian hack on Israels water supply nearly succeeded. The Israeli cyber command has raised the concern that they expect a successful cyber attack to take place at some point. The attack elicited a tempered response from Israel (unconfirmed), with a reciprocal hack on Iran’s Shahid Rajaee port facility.
OT is everywhere, where ever we need to interface and automate the control of the physical we use OT. Which is invariable liked to networks and computers. Just think of the the Target hack in 2013. So with both attacks either being successful, or nearly successful. Has the direction of travel been set for future conflict in the region, with both sides looking for suitable vulnerable targets.
