On the 16th of July, I am going to address some of the issues UK DIB contractors face with CMMC compliance that include.
1. Location-Blind Scope — same CMMC rules apply to any organisation handling CUI/FCI in the US DoD supply chain regardless of headquarters. UK companies in the supply chain face the same requirements as US firms.

2. Reciprocity — UK Defence contractors have to comply with CMMC. There are no agreed-upon reciprocal frameworks, standards, or processes.

3. Historic Compliance – CMMC is an extension of US DFARS, dating back to 2016.

4. Infrastructure and Data Residency – CMMC requires cloud providers to adhere to FedRAMP Moderate.

5. Thin C3PAO bench for UK/EU – The pool of assessors with genuine US federal expertise and UK/EU presence is very small, creating scheduling and logistics friction.

6. Flow-Down and risk transfer pressures – The DoW carries the compliance risk; this is passed to Primes, then subs. US primes like Lockheed and Northrop are already pushing compliance demands.

7. Tight Timeline – DFARS compliance has been a requirement since 2016. CMMC is now a regulation. Implementation will be required by 2028.

8. Regulatory Compliance – From a non-legal perspective.

Net effect: UK contractors need a genuinely separate NIST 800-171-aligned compliance programme, on a tight timeline, via an underdeveloped assessor market, with added data-residency complexity — existing UK/EU certifications don’t reduce that burden.
