If the reports are correct, Stryker, the US medical device Manufacturer, has been affected by a Wiper attack, which has had a global impact on operations. A wiper attack is a logical cyber threat for a pro-nation-state threat actor. If a hacker can breach an organization to ransom its domain, it can also deliver the capability to wipe an organization’s IT infrastructure.
Wiping out an organization’s IT has a significant effect on its balance sheet. Depending upon the extent of the reconnaissance. The longer a threat actor has had to conduct reconnaissance, the broader and deeper their lateral movement and access to on-prem and cloud infrastructure, the more significant the impact of the wipe. It is reported that the attack on Stryker has affected its global network, forcing a shutdown of its IT until further notice.
There are other reports that the Iranian group behind the hack has compromised multiple oil and gas installations across Israel, Jordan, and Saudi Arabia. The Israeli government is actively defending itself against cyber attacks against Israeli civilian organizations.
The latest global events have demonstrated that the predominant option is to ensure that an organization manages cybersecurity risk and, in the event of attacks such as wiper threats, ensure that it can adequately manage resilience. But that can only go so far.
The hacks demonstrate the challenges that cyber creates in the event that wars break out. Cyber is a domain of operation alongside kinetic warfare, and there’s generally little that can be done following a wiper attack. Other than rebuilding an organisation’s infrastructure, applications, and data.
