It’s hard to deploy cybersecurity for all companies, least of all SMEs. I recently looked at the average spend of the top 10 global Tier 1 banks and they all spend over $500 million a year on cyber each. Deploying cybersecurity frameworks such as NIST CSF, ISO 27001 or similar. It’s simply the cost of doing business.
For SME’s in the Federal Supply chain cyber is all to real as the enclosed article demonstrates. In this incident Sol Oriens a SME contracting with the Department of Energy National Nuclear Security Administration announced it was attacked by REvil.
The attack demonstrates the use of REvils Ransomware as a a Service (RaaS) model and the challenges smaller contractors of Critical National Infrastructure face in protecting themselves against hacks. A challenge which governments their agencies and supplier’s face, as supply chains can be long, national and international. A challenge which is being addressed through regulation in the first instance, but one requiring implementation across the shop floor throughout global supply chains.
