One wonders if the question is not one of ‘rethinking pricing’, but one of ‘rethinking value’. When AI can consume tokens and deliver the 80 from the 80:20, the question becomes how to demonstrate that you can charge enough to justify value creation. AI does the ‘donkey work’, that junior consultants, managers, and directors were doing, outside of program management and delivery resources.

As the article points out, clients want consultancies to tie their fees to deliverables and achievements, such as cost reduction, revenue growth, that facilitate corporate performance. AI is upending the consultants’ pricing model, where, once you could charge by the hour for work done, now clients want to see outcomes-based pricing. The days of billable hours are numbered.

The other effect of AI, is that it enables clients to validate consultants’ work. The magic that consultants created and billed their clients for is now widely open to scrutiny.

AI put consulting under the spotlight, with ‘value by the hour’ now at the fingertips of the companies employing consulting time. AI has closed the gap between the rubber and the road.
