Real-time governance or continuous diagnostic mitigation are both great phrases for mission objectives. But both require a level of effort, oversight, and assurance that is difficult to achieve in cybersecurity. When one considers ISO 27001 or NIST SP 800-171, NIST SP 800-53, or CSF, the range of necessary controls that require oversight and assurance to deliver real-time governance, one realises the amount of work that is required.
Cyber regulations such as EU NIS 2, NYDFS cyber rules, CMMC, or the SEC final cyber rule would all benefit from real-time governance in enabling boards to demonstrate regulatory compliance. They all require ‘Left of Bang’ proactive management of cybersecurity.
However, achieving left of bang, proactive cybersecurity, now that’s the hard part. Or to be more accurate, that’s the part that requires oversight and assurance of a significant number of cyber controls, ranging from 93 to well over 500, in real-time. That’s before you’ve integrated risks into the process.
