And here’s the problem that AI will find difficult to solve, and this video goes some way to demonstrating it and why Manufacturing will suffer from a lack of knowledge. For AI in manufacturing to be successful, it has to capture the tacit knowledge, skills, and experience of engineers and craftsmen (women). As the video demonstrates, the craftsman takes a gas cylinder and builds a stove using tacit knowledge and skill.

AI cannot solve the lack of knowledge in manufacturing, as there are many manufacturing processes that rely on tacit knowledge, skills, and experience. For example, my favourite is Turbine Blade Manufacturing that requires highly skilled workers across injection moulding, ceramics, furnaces and metrology.
Simply moving data around digital assets and enabling AI to identify information won’t fix the entire problem. You require domain-specific, grounded AI that captures the knowledge, skills, and experience of an engineer to solve complex problems and not just those related to well-designed, structured processes.
Bet AI can’t make stoves from gas cylinders, just yet 😉
